Introducing Parramasala
We invite you to join the mix at Parramasala – the first annual Australian Festival of South Asian Arts.
Across the first weekend of November, Parramatta will host a vibrant celebration of today’s professional contemporary artists from around the world who are embracing the traditions and innovations in South Asian arts. This will be a world-exclusive program where different cultures and generations come together for a rich masala or ‘mix’ of concerts, shows and fun events for everyone to enjoy.
The unmissable highlights of this year’s festival are two major outdoor events at Parramatta Park’s beautiful Crescent amphitheatre. On Friday night we present the first ever Australian concert by one of the most popular singers in India today, Kailash Kher. The following evening, enjoy a picnic under the stars and a dramatic outdoor film experience accompanied by full live orchestra, led by the brilliant British-Indian composer and music producer, Nitin Sawhney.
At Riverside Theatres, a diverse program of theatre, dance and music includes the Australian Art Orchestra in concert with India’s Sruthi Laya Ensemble; Khatak dance legend Pandit Chitresh Das in a fiery dance duel with American tap dancing superstar Jason Samuels Smith; from New Zealand, Indian Ink theatre company’s hilarious and moving one-man play about a chai tea seller from Bangalore; western Sydney’s own internationally acclaimed dancer Anandavalli in her last ever stage performance, joined by two ground-breaking Chennai musicians; and hypnotic concerts by three traditional folk ensembles who will travel to Parramatta from the ancient state of Rajasthan.
We also have a series of popular Indian film events curated by the cult film gurus at Popcorn Taxi, a sensational club program every night at The Roxy, forum discussions, a fascinating exhibition at Elizabeth Farm and even a South Asian themed cricket match.
