Riverside Theatres and the Whitlam Institute will present the touring exhibition, Behind the Lines: The year’s best political cartoons 2018 from the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD), from 31st January to 21st February 2019.
The annual exhibition celebrates the role of cartoonists in Australia and will display more than 80 of the best political cartoons from the last 12 months, created by over 30 cartoonists from a wide variety of print and online media.
Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, the theme for the exhibition is ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ and invites audiences down the rabbit hole to a topsy-turvy world where nothing is as it seems.
The exhibition will include work from masters of cartoon art including John Shakespeare, David Rowe, Michael Leunig, Cathy Wilcox, Mark Knight and for the first time, Jason Chatfield – an Australian cartoonist now illustrating for The New Yorker.
MoAD Director Daryl Karp said, “Each week Australia’s political cartoonists have captured the goings-on in parliament with humour and wit. Australia has a long and proud tradition of political satire and each year the exhibition celebrates our democracy and our freedom of speech.”
