Art in the Park with the Parramatta Art Society
Join the Parramatta Art Society for a leisurely day of art on the front lawn of Old Government House. Set up your easel, board or other equipment and enjoy the fresh air while you turn your hand to capturing the beauty of the surrounding parkland.
The focus of the day will be illustrating the beautiful trees of Parramatta Park, either as part of the wider landscape or a study of their botanical detail, in homage to George Caley. Caley was the first appointed Colonial Botanist and collected specimens from around Old Government House, using the building to dry them. Once dry these specimens were sent back to the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew, England, and successfully grown into some of their first Australian plants.
To help you in your artistic endeavours, Parramatta Art Society members will be on hand to offer assistance with your chosen medium. For beginners, drawing materials will be supplied and assistance given to get you started in landscape or botanical drawing.
Tickets will be available for the Enquiring Minds exhibition which features specimens collected by the colonial botanists and early botanical illustrations. Lachlan’s restaurant will be open offering hot and cold drinks, refreshments and café-style menu throughout the day.
Artists of all abilities are invited to bring along their paints, pencils and other supplies, or make use of the materials supplied, and participate in this free event. Bookings are essential as attendance numbers will be limited to meet our COVID-19 safety requirements.
Please note that this is an outdoor event and we recommend you dress for the weather. A hat and sunglasses are recommended if sunshine is predicted. In the event of wet weather this event will be postponed. Please check the event webpage for updates.
In conjunction with this event the City of Parramatta Art Society will be exhibiting relevant works in their Hunter Street Gallery (Shop 6, 4-14 Hunter Street, Parramatta) just a short stroll from Old Government House.
