Harrys Cafe de Wheels Parramatta
Harry's Cafe de Wheels is an iconic pie cart. Harry's Cafe de Wheels is a moveable food van, similar to those found at funfairs, with a hung awning. The caravan walls have been decorated with custom painted murals by Alan Puckett, a motoring art specialist. The inside walls of the cart are decorated with pictures and murals of famous visitors.
HARRY’S HISTORY
- - With the world just recovering from the Depression, enterprising Sydneysider Harry Edwards opened a caravan cafe in 1938 near the gates of the Woolloomooloo naval dockyard.
- - The phrase Cafe de Wheels came about as the city council of the day insisted that mobile food caravans move a minimum of 12 inches a day. Harry obeyed and the name was expanded to Harry’s Cafe de Wheels.
- - Despite changes of ownership, it continued to attract people and became a must-visit for celebrities. In 1974, chicken king Colonel Sanders stopped by and ate three pies with peas. Elton John even held a press conference from inside Harry’s during the 1970s.
- - In 2004, Harry’s was classified by the National Trust of Australia as a quintessential Sydney icon.
